We just had the opportunity to see what Minecraft has been working on for the first update of 2025. They are working on making biomes feel more alive and immersive, by focusing on how we experience our Minecraft worlds when we play.
The first thing to take note of is Minecraft’s plans to have 2 Minecraft Lives per year, every 6 months. New changes and additions will be coming out as “Game Drops” throughout the year. These will vary in content size (could be a lot of stuff, or a little), but they want to provide some new things more frequently throughout the year.
When Is The New Update Coming?

The question everyone wants to know whenever a Minecraft Live happens is, “when do we get the new stuff?” Good news, you get the new stuff March 25, 2025.
In just a matter of days you’ll be able to enjoy most of these new features. Keep in mind that some things may be unavailable depending upon the version of Minecraft you play (Java or Bedrock Edition).
We’ll also mention some changes coming in the 2nd update of 2025, and it’s supposed to be available for beta testing shortly, though we don’t have a specific date yet.
What Can We Expect In The New Minecraft Update?

There’s plenty coming in the new Spring To Life Minecraft update. There’s a focus on making biomes feel more distinct from one another which means more “blocks” like grasses that are specific to certain biomes, leaf litter, or flowers.
One of the other updates that was previously discussed is the addition of biome-influenced mobs. There will be variants for cows, pigs, and chickens.
Depending on the biome where you find these animals, you’ll encounter different cows, pigs and chickens. Don’t worry, the familiar mobs you know and love still exist, but there are warm and cold-weather variants now.
Sound design is something Minecraft does very well, but the developers have added new sounds to the game. These new sounds are for a variety of things such as the new blocks being added, and personality variations for the wolves.

In addition to regular block sounds, when traveling in the desert biome, for examples, you’ll be hearing ambiance sounds like wind and sand particles. Sound design can really impact how we experience things, so it will be interesting to see how these make biomes feel more immersive.
Another theme that the developers said they worked on was making the biomes feel more alive. The addition of firefly bushes in swamps and near rivers will make the nights feel more lively. These firefly bushes will attract light particles that represent fireflies.
The new light source creates an interesting dynamic, and also reacts to the time of day. Fireflies disappear in the day, and return at night. There’s also the possibility that the firefly bushes can be switched on and off, most likely with a redstone signal.
Anyone who uses creative mode may appreciate a visual update for spawn eggs. There are lots of mobs now, and if you’ve been having difficulty telling the eggs apart, you’re in luck.
Minecraft is trying to make the eggs more distinct and obvious for the mob it represents. You can still hover your mouse over the egg to see exactly what it is for.
The recipe for the lodestone block will also change. Instead of requiring a netherite ingot, it will require an iron ingot. This makes obtaining lodestones much easier. They can now also be found in chests at nether portal ruins.
The cartographer is also being updated. You’ll be able to get maps to other villages in different biomes to help you explore.
Upcoming Additions To Minecraft

Vibrant Visuals is one of the ways developers plan to enhance the experience of playing Minecraft. It gives the look of shaders, without having to install separate third-party software. This change will hopefully be available on Bedrock Edition in a few months.
Vibrant Visuals is also a setting on the client-side, meaning it’s something each person can control on their end. You get to be in charge of the visual experience. Maybe you want to turn them on for some epic photos, but then you want to turn them back off for that OG vanilla Minecraft experience.
We can expect to see shadows that shift and react to the time of day, and light will filter through windows to actually illuminate rooms if windows are facing the sun. Vibrant Visuals can be used on all previous worlds (Bedrock only for now), by just turning the setting on.
For the second update of the year, we have a very special addition to Minecraft. If you visit a soul sand valley and look for the giant bones, or fossils, you may find a Dried Ghast.

It has a brown hue, so it may be difficult to see from a distance. You can dig it up, no special tool required, and bring it back to the overworld. Put the Dried Ghast into water to hydrate it.
Over a long period of time, the Dried Ghast will rehydrate and become a Ghastling. Think of it as a puppy-sized Ghast, but it’ll be wearing a smile instead of a sad frown.
The Ghastling will keep growing, or you can feed it snowballs to speed up the process. Its final form is the Happy Ghast, which is the size of a normal Ghast, but it’s a happy one that won’t attack you with molten lava missiles.
You’ll be able to craft a new item: the harness. A harness allows you to ride on a Happy Ghast. You’ll be able to fly through your Minecraft worlds even without an elytra.
They’ll also make building significantly easier since you can position the Happy Ghast where you want it, and if you dismount to stand on it’s back, it will stay in that position while you work.
The great news for people who play Minecraft with friends, is that you can fly with a total of 4 people on a Happy Ghast. To help you keep track of your friends, or bail them out of trouble, a new locator bar can help you find them. The bar will appear right above the normal hotbar where the experience bar is currently.
